 Balasore Train Accident: Death Toll Rises to 300, Over 800 Injured

A horrific train accident took place in Odisha's Balasore district on Friday, June 2, 2023. Three trains collided near the Bahanaga railway station, killing at least 300 people and injuring over 1000.

The accident happened around 7:20 PM when the Coromandel Express, which was traveling from Howrah to Chennai, derailed and collided with a goods train. The impact of the collision caused the Coromandel Express to derail further and collide with a third train, the Yeshwanthpur-Howrah Express.

The death toll is expected to rise as rescue workers continue to search through the wreckage of the trains. Many of the injured are in critical condition and have been taken to nearby hospitals.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation, but officials believe that it may have been due to a human error or a mechanical failure.

The accident has caused widespread shock and grief in India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and has ordered a probe into the accident.

The Indian Railways has announced a compensation of ₹1 lakh (US$1,250) to the families of each of the deceased and ₹50,000 (US$625) to the injured.

The accident is a reminder of the dangers of train travel in India. The country has a high rate of train accidents, and many of them are caused by human error or a lack of safety regulations.
